As you were, limbs

aloft and

eagerly splayed,

still practicing

the old faith

as I do—

these words,

pushed to the fore,

posing

Are

I want to go on forming

letters,

willing this

fluidity

as if I could

pilot a stream

as it freezes

into shapes.

Soft clouds advancing

from the west, their

fripperies,

vagaries.

Pair of mockingbirds

on a wire, seining

the neighborhood

for sounds.

Apart from “is” and “are,”

verbs act out

metaphorically

Pen stopped, tip to page

for an instant

as if purpose

was ribbed,

striated
